*Flashback – a few weeks ago when I was strolling down the aisles of Mothercare in Huaihai Road looking for some sleeping outfit and new stroller for Bri and the said person was busy running around taking items off the display racks while making big noises as she was almost done for the day, I overheard conversation between the two ladies in the store. They’re Indonesians! My, I was so happy to find fellow Indonesians in Shanghai. To make long story short, we exchanged phone numbers*
So today, she called me again to invite me out for lunch with a friend of her somewhere in Taikang Road. I’ve never been to this area before. But as soon as I got off the car, I could see the winding alleys of well-kept clean stone pathway with rows of art galleries, shops and cafes along the way. It certainly has a xintiandi-ish feeling to it, but with more turns & corners to explore. More artistic with more affordable stuff that one can actually purchase. The area is more specifically known as Tianzifang – the Art Street and SOHO of Shanghai.
Originally it was an old factory area but turned into an art street by the government. Tianzifang is located in the Lane 210, Taikang Rd and covers an area of 20,000 square meters. Most of the buildings here are Shikumen style (Stone Gate, a traditional residential house). In short, my first impression was ” WOW! Mike has got to see this”
We then proceeded to a Thai restaurant a few alleys down. Tucked away in a corner, I can’t even remember the name but they had the best Thai food. Honestly. Beef Green Curry, Thai Basil in Spices, Pad Thai, even the Iced Lemon Tea with fresh mint tastes heaven! Yes I was pretty hungry, but no doubt that was the best Thai food ever. Better than Simply Thai actually as I think they tend to be a bit generous with msg.
The afternoon was perfect, with a few drizzles here and there, I’m quite happy that Bri is sitting comfortably in her new stroller we finally got from Mothercare. The bad thing about the stroller is there’s barely any room to keep shopping bags underneath it. But anyway, it was a nice afternoon with nice company and great place to explore. What more could I ask for?
