Flour Monkey

Literally. Ha! that’s what happens everytime mommy steps into the kitchen. The curious lil monkey follows mommy around, being overly curious about what mommy is doing in the kitchen. She will distract herself doing all sorts of other things in the kitchen, until finally she drags her green plastic chair towards the kitchen counter, climbs up to peek what’s on there.

There’s always some cool playthings in the kitchen. Mommy usually lets Bri experiences with textures of different things – rice, beans, flour, sugar…..  or smell the difference between coffee, peanut butter, garlic, onions and ginger. One time mommy let lil Bri mixed the flour with some baking ingredients. Bri welcomed the task delightfully. She eagerly mixed the flour with a spatula. Five minutes later, she dropped the spatula and used a finger. Of course, 1o minutes later, both hands were inside the bowl of flour while mommy was busy preparing the mixture of boiled dates for her sticky date pudding.

Soon enough, the lil monkey built flour-castle and let her rubber duckie joined the fun.  Being very imaginative like all kids, she decided it was raining flour now. Time to get baby out of the kitchen, mom!

It was fun for her, extra work for mommy. But mommy didn’t mind it most of the time. Briana can be very helpful under supervision. Mommy is amazed how quickly she learns things, like using the stand mixer. She knows which button to push to slow down, knows that when we break the eggs the machine has to slow down. She helps breaking the eggs one by one….  watches contentedly the beater spins around and around. Sometimes she experiments on “what happen if I also dump the egg shells in?”  Whoaaaaa, good thing mommy has a quick reflex.

oh my… what a mess! but she’s having fun, and you don’t mind, so i guess it’s ok.

I only started letting my kids help me in the kitchen last year. Eldest was coming to 6, and youngest coming to 4.

Now, they started using the stove to fry egg and pancakes, and started helping me make scones, crack eggs and all. I don’t like cleaning up, that’s why I only let them help once they know the ‘rules’ and are more mature.

    Well done to you though.
